One AKS pattern, deployed and managed across every environment

A client running business-critical containerised workloads on Azure needed the same Azure Kubernetes Service platform to exist identically across every environment — and to stay that way. North Peak Cloud codified a single AKS landing-zone pattern as infrastructure-as-code, deploys it the same way to each environment through GitOps, and manages it on an ongoing basis. The result is consistency by design: no drift, no snowflake clusters, and one place to secure, scale and cost-control the whole estate.

Key takeaways
  • One codified AKS pattern is deployed identically to every environment — configuration drift is eliminated by construction.
  • New environments are stood up from the same code rather than rebuilt by hand.
  • North Peak Cloud manages the platform on an ongoing basis — security, scaling, upgrades and cost.
  • Cost is controlled through right-sizing, autoscaling and spot node pools.

The challenge

The client runs business-critical containerised workloads on Azure Kubernetes Service across multiple environments. Keeping those environments consistent — and keeping them that way over time — is where most Kubernetes estates come unstuck: clusters get hand-tweaked, configurations drift apart, and what works in one environment breaks in the next. Managing that by hand does not scale, and it quietly erodes both reliability and cost control.

The approach

North Peak Cloud codified a single AKS landing-zone pattern as infrastructure-as-code and made it the one source of truth for every environment:

  • One pattern, defined as code — the cluster, node pools, networking, identity and policy are all defined once, in version control.
  • Deployed identically via GitOps — each environment is generated from the same pattern through an automated pipeline, not configured by hand.
  • Guardrails built in — Azure Policy, identity and network controls are part of the pattern, so security holds in every environment.
  • Managed on an ongoing basis — North Peak Cloud runs the platform day to day: monitoring, upgrades, scaling and cost.

The results

  • No drift. Every environment is generated from the same code, so dev, test and production stay in lockstep — a change is made once and rolled out everywhere.
  • Repeatable environments. A new environment is stood up from the pattern rather than rebuilt by hand.
  • A managed platform, not a maintenance burden. Patching, upgrades, scaling and security are handled by North Peak Cloud, so the client's engineers build on the platform instead of running it.
  • Cost under control. Right-sizing, autoscaling and spot node pools keep the container estate efficient as it grows.

Why it matters

The value of a codified AKS platform is not a one-off deployment — it is the compounding advantage of consistency. Every environment behaves the same, every change is safe and repeatable, and the whole estate is secured and cost-controlled from one place. That is the difference between Kubernetes as a liability and Kubernetes as a foundation.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How do you manage AKS consistently across multiple environments?+

By defining one AKS platform as infrastructure-as-code and deploying it identically to every environment through GitOps. Because each environment is generated from the same pattern, they cannot drift apart, and a change is made once and rolled out everywhere.

How do you stop configuration drift between AKS environments?+

Drift is prevented by construction: environments are not hand-configured, they are generated from a single versioned pattern. Any change goes through the pattern and its pipeline, so dev, test and production stay in lockstep.

Can North Peak Cloud manage our AKS clusters ongoing?+

Yes. Beyond building the platform, North Peak Cloud manages AKS on an ongoing basis — monitoring, patching, upgrades, security and cost optimisation — so your team can build on it rather than run it.
